Sugar Free Dessert Recipes: Healthier Apple Chai Coffeecake



A warm mug of chai is best served with a fresh baked treat to complement. We’ve taken to one of our favorite chai tea desserts and made it healthier. Indulge a little, without the guilt.

What you’ll need:
1 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
3/8 cup honey
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup applesauce
1/3 cup Sugar Free Original Oregon Chai Tea Latte Concentrate
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup pure maple syrup
3 tbsp. applesauce
2 cups apples, pared, cored and sliced
1/4 cup Sugar Free Original Oregon Chai Tea Latte Concentrate
1 spoonful unrefined coconut oil

For the cake:

  1. In large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon.
  2. Add applesauce and mix until crumbly.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together Sugar Free Original Oregon Chai Tea Latte Concentrate, egg and vanilla.
  4. Blend two mixtures together.
  5. Spread combined mixture into a 9×9-inch greased baking pan or small Bundt pan.

For the topping:

  1. In a small bowl mix flour, maple syrup and applesauce until crumbly and set aside.
  2. In a saucepan sauté apples in coconut oil for approximately 2 minutes.
  3. Add Sugar Free Original Oregon Chai Tea Latte Concentrate, cover and continue to cook for 2 more minutes.
  4. Spread the crumb mixture over the cake batter.
  5. Spoon the apples over the batter and crumb mixture.
  6. Bake at 350 degrees for one hour or until the top is golden brown.
  7. Enjoy your dessert, guilt-free!

This recipe uses whole wheat flour instead of white. Whole wheat flour has a high fiber content, helps regulate blood sugar and contains several vitamins.

Substituting honey instead of sugar in the cake makes for a natural way to increase energy levels and strengthen your immune system. For the topping, we substituted pure maple syrup for sugar. Maple syrup has high levels of antioxidants and enzymes, which aid your heart and immune system.

Applesauce is often a healthy substitution for butter—and it also makes the cake taste more like apple pie. All-natural applesauce has low sugar levels and high fiber content, plus it’s good for your heart.

Try coconut oil instead of butter to sauté the apple slices. Coconut oil is a healthy fat and has antimicrobial, antifungal and antiviral properties.

We swapped our Original Oregon Chai Tea Latte Concentrate for our sugar free version. Sugar Free Original Oregon Chai Tea Latte Concentrate still has all the same delicious chai spices as our original, without the sugar.
